Hello!
Thank you for your interest in joining our production! If you’re on this page, that means we liked your initial submission, and we are interested in seeing you audition. Congratulations! We look forward to meeting you :)
On this page we will break down the three plays, provide character descriptions, and give you all relevant disclaimers regarding content (as mentioned in the casting call, these are plays with adult themes). With that information, you can decide which role you are most interested in, and then start shaping your idea for your audition.
At the bottom of the page you will find audition time windows, and instructions on how to book your personal time slot.
The Party
This play takes place at the buffet table of a swinger’s party. A man and a woman meat at the snack table of an exclusive, anonymous sex party, and begin talking as they forage. The discussion starts about the food on display, then shifts to the party itself. The man, MITCH, isn’t really participating, because it’s his first time and he’s not sure how to behave. The woman, MONICA, isn’t participating either, still debating what she’s going to do. When Monica lets slip that she knows Mitch’s name, the conversation keeps returning to how she knows who he is, no matter how hard she tries to take it in other directions.
DISCLAIMERS - This play has detailed dialogue about sexual intercourse. Characters are in partial undress for duration, essentially in underwear.
Character Breakdown
MITCH - He is on the younger side, perhaps in his 20s. He is friendly, and he has positive energy, despite being a little nervous and feeling a tad out of place. He is happy to have someone to talk to, because he’s not quite ready for what the party has to offer.
MONICA - Monica can be any age from 18-35. She is confident, quick, and personable (disarming). She smiles easily, and keeps conversation moving. She has the personality of a good salesman — she is in charge of the exchange, but she plays it off as if she is following the other person’s lead.
The Session
This play takes place in a therapist’s office, and is written as two male characters. In theory, the therapist could be played by any gender presentation. A THERAPIST sits across from his new PATIENT, and provides space for the patient to talk. At first the patient is reluctant, but slowly he opens up about how he has ended his career as a result of a string of bad luck, including a deceased parent, a miscarriage, and an estranged wife.
DISCLAIMERS - This play has dialogue about domestic violence. There is a brief physical confrontation (the beginning of a fight) at the very end.
Character Breakdown
THERAPIST - Calm and collected. Maintains composure even as his patient becomes agitated. Is genuinely interested in helping his patient, and believes the best way to do that is to hold open space. Dressed somewhere between business and casual. Wears sneakers. Any age between 24 and 35.
PATIENT - On edge. Guarded. Is attempting to appear personable and open, but the mask keeps slipping. He has a lot of anger in him, and is trying to hide that (among other things). Casual dress, but sharp. Late 20s to mid 30s.
The Waiting Room
This play takes place in the waiting room of an abortion clinic. This is a monologue from GABBY, a young woman who is about to get an abortion. She speaks to the audience about her theory of new life, the miracle of chance, and how she could never allow herself to bring another person into a world such as ours.
DISCLAIMERS - This monologue discusses sex, details about the abortion procedure, and political commentary about the state of the world.
Character Breakdown
GABBY - Any age between 18 and 35. Dressed super casual, in sweats and sneakers. She is an enthusiastic communicator, and interested in her own ideas. She is talking about negative things, but she is more amused by her thoughts than she is held down by her feelings. She is somewhat sad that she is getting an abortion, but she is proud of her decision, and does not want a child.
